How winch size calculators work

Plain-language guide to sizing a recovery winch from GVWR, the 1.5× rule, terrain factors, and first-wrap rated line pull — plus when the answer is NO_MATCH.

What this tool answers

You need a first-pass rated line pull before buying a 12V recovery winch for an ATV, UTV, Jeep, or light truck. The calculator estimates minimum capacity from GVWR and terrain, then names the smallest class on this site’s ladder (4,500, 6,000, or 12,000 lb) that clears the estimate. It is not a recovery procedure, bumper engineering review, or substitute for manufacturer mounting instructions.

The 1.5× GVWR rule

Winch makers such as Warn teach a simple minimum: take the vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and multiply by 1.5. Real pulls involve friction, suction, and grade, so a winch rated exactly at curb weight is usually undersized. Always use GVWR from the door sticker when available — not empty curb weight alone.

Terrain factors on this site

This screen multiplies the 1.5× baseline by a terrain factor: 1.0 for firm, mostly flat ground; 1.1 for moderate mud, sand, or incline; 1.25 for extreme soft ground or steep grade. Those factors match common consumer winch-size calculators. They are screening aids, not measured soil mechanics.

First-wrap ratings

Published rated line pull is typically measured on the first (innermost) wrap of rope on the drum. Capacity falls as layers build because leverage worsens. Size for first-wrap rating, keep rope layers low when possible, and treat outer-layer pulls as reduced capacity.

When the answer is NO_MATCH

If required pull exceeds 12,000 lb, this site returns NO_MATCH for its published class ladder. Typical next steps: a higher-rated truck winch, a correctly rated snatch-block system with matching accessories, or professional recovery. Do not force an undersized 12V unit.

Safety notes

Recovery loads can exceed static weight. Use rated straps, shackles, and anchors. Keep people clear of the line. Follow the winch maker’s wiring and duty-cycle limits. This site does not certify recoveries.
